Jon Gardner is nine. He loves books and history and is painfully polite. He notices things that most miss. Tam Gardner is thirteen. He is good with horses and a great help at the farm. Everywhere else, he finds himself rather awkward. Professor Eabrey Sheridan is a somewhat mysterious academic with an interest in the ancient world and in learning the secrets the past has forgotten.

Kara is a thief.  She picks locks, pockets, and sometimes fights.  She likes outwitting people larger than her, and kicking things.  She has a lot of dislikes.

Djaren Blackfeather is a bright and adventurous scholar still quite early in his career.  He wants to learn every word in every language spoken.

Anna Darvin is a promising young artist.  She chronicles all the Blackfeather family's finds with her drawings.

 Lady Hellin Blackfeather is a capable and accomplished woman, as she must be to manage an excavation camp, her brilliant but eccentric family, and all the details of being an archeologist and scholar herself.

Ellea Blackfeather is a somewhat odd little girl. 

Doctor Corin Blackfeather is a reclusive Shandorian scholar about whom little is known or remembered.
